Accused Stalker Inquired: 'Yet Imagine I Could Be Madeleine?'

A woman charged with stalking Kate McCann allegedly left her a recorded message which asked: "suppose I am Madeleine?"

The defendant, 24, who witnesses stated has consistently claimed she was the vanished Madeleine McCann, and Karen Spragg are standing trial indicted with stalking Kate and Gerry McCann between June 2022 and February 2025.

On Monday, Leicester Crown Court learned phone records and information recovered from phones logged Ms Wandelt repeatedly asking Madeleine's mother for a biological test over that period.

Madeleine's case in 2007 - as a three-year-old during a trip in Portugal - is among the most covered missing child cases and is still unresolved.

'I Am Not Seeking Money'

A separate recorded message, played in court, documented Ms Wandelt declaring: "I know I'm heavy and unattractive like Madeleine used to be, but I feel what I believe."

While a separate message of Ms Wandelt's recordings with Mrs McCann's answerphone expressed: "What if there is a small chance that I am she? Then what? Isn't that crucial for you?"

"I don't want money, I maintain a living here in Poland, I simply desire to know," the message continued.

The panel was told that by means of emails, mobile messages and phone calls, Ms Wandelt demanded a DNA test, sent early photographs to her phone in a bid to show a similarity to Mrs McCann's disappeared daughter, and claimed to have "flashbacks" from a early life with the McCanns.

Robert Jones, an intelligence analyst with law enforcement who gathered the evidence, advised the court there "seemed to lack any replies" from Mrs McCann.

Ms Wandelt additionally reached out to close associates of the McCanns, based on the communication logs.

On that date, Gerry McCann answered a call from Ms Wandelt to his wife's phone, declaring she had "incorrect contact information."

During that incident Ms Wandelt recorded a voicemail on Mrs McCann's answerphone stating "I will continue and I will prove my claim."

The court heard the co-defendant established a association via internet with Ms Wandelt prior to joining her on a visit to the McCanns' property in Leicestershire in that winter.

Phone records demonstrated Mrs Spragg had reached out through communication app to Mrs McCann to express the news outlets had characterized Ms Wandelt as "a crazy person" but that she deserved to be treated respectfully in the period preceding the trip to the village, that area, in that winter.

The court learned communications between the two defendants, in November 2024, planning endeavoring to acquire Mrs McCann's biological evidence from her trash or from utensils at a eating establishment.

"We need to take action," the co-defendant told Ms Wandelt.
